Tentative new trial dates set for Fort Macleod RCMP Officer charged with assault

LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE: The case against Fort Macleod RCMP officer, Troy William Heystek, who was scheduled for trial on Dec 7, 2020, has been resolved with a peace bond.

The bond stipulates several conditions for Heystek, including he undergo an assessment, as well as completing treatment or counselling, as recommended by a probation officer. He is also not to be in contact with the complainant in this case.

A Fort Macleod RCMP officer charged with one count of assault in relation to an alleged physical exchange with a Granum resident, will be back in court in March, 2020 to confirm new trial dates.

Cst. Troy Heystek’s trial was supposed to take place in August 8 and 9 but was cancelled.

Lethbridge lawyer Claudia Connolly, acting on behalf of Heystek’s Calgary lawyer Cory Wilson, told a Lethbridge Provincial court judge on Thursday Aug. 15, expert witnesses still need to be secured for the trial.

If they are, the trial is expected to run for three days from April 28-30, 2020.

Case History

On April 13, 2018, Cst. Troy Heystek responded to a 911 call made from a home in Granum. After confirming the welfare of the resident of that home, Cst. Heystek and the resident had a verbal exchange that escalated and became physical.

It is alleged that Cst. Heystek pushed and punched the resident.

The matter was investigated by the Crowsnest Pass RCMP Detachment and on Nov. 26, Cst. Heystek was charged with one count of assault (s.266 CC).

Heystek has been assigned an administrative role pending the outcome of the trial.
