“Plain Language” session to explain federal election issues, voting processes more clearly

Sep 9, 2019 | 11:57 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The first in a series of Plain Language Information Sessions will cover voting-related issues in ways that make more sense and are easier to understand.

They are being hosted by Aileen Burke, the Community Navigator with Inclusion Lethbridge, who believes the sessions will be particularly useful for first-time voters, people with disabilities, and those who do not speak English as their first language.

“Politics is very complicated and there’s messages coming at you from all sorts of different media outlets and the parties themselves, and sometimes, it’s hard to understand what information is relevant and important for you to know.”

In the first session, Burke will go over topics like how to register to vote, the different ways people can vote, what kinds of ID you will need at the polling station, marking your ballot, and accessibility when it comes to voting.

It takes place from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 10th at the Volunteer Lethbridge office on 324 5th Street South.

While the timing may exclude some from participating, Burke says it was chosen because some people with disabilities only have support services during the work day.

She believes that providing information like this in this manner will result in an overall higher voter turnout.

“We did this provincially for the provincial election, and we definitely had people vote for the first time who have been eligible to vote for years and years who finally found a way to breach those barriers to vote for the first time, so I anticipate that we will experience much of the same federally.”

In future sessions, Burke will hold a mock vote, a registration drive, and a plain-language discussion on party platforms.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Pre-registration is not required.
