LETHBRIDGE — The Canes and Tigers spent most of the first half of the first period of their first game against each other in the new season sizing each other up.

It wasn’t until the 16-minute mark that tempers flared at centre ice. The Canes’ Tyson Phare and the Tigers’ Parker Gavlas got into and earned themselves five-minute majors for fighting.

The first period ended on a positive note for the Canes. With ten seconds remaining, D-Jay Jerome planted his first goal of the season, assisted by Dino Kambeitz and Alex Cotton.

The Canes worked their stick play into a 2-0 lead mid-way through the second frame. This time, the goal was courtesy of Dino Kambeitz, assisted by Oliver Okuliar and a second game assist from Alex Cotton.

Two minutes later, while the Canes worked on a penalty kill, the Tigers’ Cole Sillinger took advantage of the power play to net his team’s first goal of the game. However, the period ended with the Canes ahead 2-1.

Heading into the final period and wanting to maintain their advantage, Hurricane Jacob Boucher lobbed a short-handed goal on a break-away at 2:48, giving the home team a 3-1 lead – which was short-lived.

Half-way through the period, the Tigers got their second wind. At 9:27, Bryan Lockner cut the Canes’ lead to 3-2 and a minute-and-a-half later, Ryan Chyzowski tied the game.

The game buzzer sounded on the 3-3 tie. After a scoreless over time, the game moved into a shoot-out, with Ryan Chyzowski scoring the game winner for the Tigers.

The two teams have a rematch Saturday (Sept 21) in Medicine Hat. Calen Addison is expected to join the Canes after being released by the Penguins.
