Enrollment numbers up for Lethbridge School District 51

LETHBRIDGE, AB – More students are attending Lethbridge public schools than last year.

The latest numbers are in from Lethbridge School District No. 51, and elementary schools have an overall enrollment boost of 1.85 percent for this year.

Elementary schools in the district are categorized as grades 1 to 5.

SD51 grouped schools together by regions in Lethbridge. On the North side, there are 1,359 students in elementary grades, up 25 from the 2018-2019 year.

On the South side, student enrollment dropped by 7 from 2018-2019 to 1,265 this year. Schools on the West side saw the biggest leap, up 63 to 1,844 this school year.

In total, the elementary schools group has 81 more students enrolled this year versus the 2018-2019 year, with 4,468 students registered.

Shifting to middle schools (grades 6-8), there are 78 more students this year than last. In total, there are 4,468 learners, interestingly enough, the same number as students in the elementary group.

On the North side, there are 880 students, up 44 from last year. The South side has 768 learners, up 55 from 2018-2019.

The West side actually saw a drop of 21 students, with 929 students registered this year.

Moving up to high schools (grades 9-12), there are 3,163 students, up 142 from the 2018-2019 year.

The North side made it past the thousand student mark, with 1,025 (up 77 from last year).

The South side has 914 students (up 37 from 2018-2019) and the West side saw a 28-student jump for 1,188 learners.

In total, there are 3,163 high school students in the SD51 system. That’s a jump of 142 students from the 2018-2019 school year.

Combined (grades 1-12), there are 3,300 students at North side schools, 2,847 on the South side and 3,961 on the West side, for a total of 10,208 registered students in SD51 schools across Lethbridge.

That’s up from 9,907 in 2018-2019.

SD51 noted that the numbers do not include Victoria Park High School. The District also provided estimated class sizes for grades 1 through 5.

Grade 1 classrooms have an estimated 19.8 students, 20.1 for grade 2, 22.3 for grade 3, 23.1 for grade 4 and 24.5 students in grade 5 classrooms.
