LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College has announced a new space for student entrepreneurs.

The school’s Centre for Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CARIE) is celebrating the grand opening of The Pivot.

The Pivot includes offices and entrepreneur space on the second floor of the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility.

“Over the past year, we have tripled our externally-funded applied research projects and have re-built our administrative team up to six members,” said Associate Vice President – Research, Dr. Kenny Corscadden, in a college-issued release.

Corscadden noted that the school has appointed two new applied research chairs and Lethbridge College has been chosen as one of 17 post-secondary institutions to take part in a Tri-Council Equity, Diversity and Inclusion pilot project. More details on that can be found here.

The Pivot provides an open-concept space where students, faculty, researchers and industry members can work together. According to the college, The Pivot grew from the Agricultural Entrepreneur in Residence (agent) extracurricular program.

“The Pivot is the central point from which the college will nurture innovation and grow ideas,” said Megan Shapka, manager of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in the release.

“It is a versatile collaboration space for cultivating student-entrepreneurs. Not only is it the home of all AgENT workshops and events, it will also act as a student business incubator space, giving students access to resources, technology, business advisors and one-on-one coaching.”

The Pivot joins the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence as the latest infrastructure addition at the college. The Aquaculture Centre is a 6,500 square foot space in the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility.

It’s been a successful year for Lethbridge College.

The institution has been named by Research Infosource as one of Canada’s top-50 research colleges for the last two years and in five of the past six years.
