LETHBRIDGE, AB – A triumphant return of a familiar face was thwarted by the visiting Red Deer Rebels.

Dylan Cozens, drafted by the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres back in June, was reassigned to the Lethbridge Hurricanes earlier this week.

He made his return to action at the ENMAX Centre Friday night, in a meeting with the Red Deer Rebels.

He started the game off hot, scoring the matchup’s opening goal at the 6:53 mark of the first period, off an assist by Oliver Okuliar.

Red Deer’s Brett Davis responded at 8:34, scoring his second goal of the season. Blake Gustafson and Mason Ward earned the assists.

After one period, the game was tied, 1-1.

Penalties in the opening period included a 10-minute misconduct for Red Deer’s Cameron Hausinger and a tripping minor for Ethan Sakowich of the Rebels.

The second period was all Red Deer, with the Rebels going up 2-1 at the 8:14 mark off a goal from Dawson Barteaux, his first of the season.

Josh Tarzwell later scored his first of the season as well, at the 16:44 mark to put Red Deer up 3-1 going into the game’s third and final frame.

During the second, Lethbridge’s Justin Hall wracked up two penalties; a minor for cross-checking at the 7:19 mark and a minor for tripping at 15:37.

Late in the third period, the ‘Canes pulled goalie Carl Tetachuk.

This was followed up by Calen Addison scoring at the 17:27 mark of the final frame, bringing Red Deer’s lead down to one, at 3-2.

But, Lethbridge’s hopes for a comeback were dashed by Tarzwell, who scored not one, but two empty-netters to secure the 5-2 road win for Red Deer.

Up next for the Rebels is a meeting with the Calgary Hitmen tomorrow.

The Hurricanes, now with one win and two losses (one shoot-out loss) on the season, hit the road for a matchup against the Edmonton Oil Kings Sunday, Sept. 29.
