CIBC Run for the Cure aims to raise $60K in Lethbridge this Sunday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The weather is warming up and so are the runners in this year’s local CIBC Run for the Cure event.

This will be the 25th year CIBC has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) to support those with breast cancer and to research cures.

Development Officer of Annual Giving with CCS Sarah Eccleston says more than 350 people have already signed up online and she expects more to do so in the coming days.

The group has once again set an ambitious fundraising goal.

“This year’s fundraising goal is $60,000 and we’re trending, actually, slightly higher than last year, which is really exciting. We’re definitely on par to hit our goal.”

Last year, Lethbridge’s runners raised approximately $58,000.

The 2019 run will follow the same path as 2018’s – offering both a one-kilometer and a five-kilometer route starting at the Exhibition Park Main Pavilion.

A new addition this year is something Eccleston calls the “Hope Lounge.”

“This special area is reserved for any people directly touched by breast cancer including survivors, men or women in treatment, or those genetically at a higher risk of receiving breast cancer in their lifetime. We have a lot of special activities – we’re going to have manicures for them, tattoos, massages, as well as special refreshments, coffee, and snacks for them.”

According to numbers released by Stats Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, one in eight women will be afflicted with breast cancer in their lifetime. Eccleston says this is the reason CIBC chooses to support breast cancer as their biggest annual fundraiser.

The opening ceremonies start at 9:10 am on Sunday, October 6th with both runs beginning at 10:00 am.

If you would like to take part but still need to register, you can do so online here or by signing up at the event.
