Hurricanes down Regina 5-4 during third game in three days

REGINA — After two losses in two successive nights, the Hurricanes hit the ice in Regina Sunday afternoon fired-up and hungry to change their fortunes.

The first 20-minutes offered more action than the first periods of the previous two games in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

The home team once again struck first. Just over a minute into the game, the Pats’ Logan Nijhoff tipped off the scoring for his team.

Regina’s 1-0 lead was short-lived. At 5:44, Ty Prefontaine lobbed in his first goal of the season for the Canes, off an assist from Chase Wheatcroft and Noah Boyko. Just 60-seconds later, Dylan Cozens notched his seventh goal and took the score to 2-0.

The first period action wasn’t over. The Pats’ Austin Pratt evened the score at 9:32 on a power-play.

With less than two minutes remaining, Oliver Okuliar put the Canes ahead 3-2, thanks to an assist from Calen Addison. And, within seconds, there was significant penalty action. The Pats Logan Nijhoff was tapped with a five-minute major for kneeing Hurricane Zack Stringer. Nijhoff also earned himself a Game Misconduct.

Most of the second period scoring happened within 60-seconds mid-frame. At the nine-minute mark, Ty Nash slipped one through the pipes, off an assist from Logan Barlage. Then, 17-seconds later, Oliver Okuliar lobbed a short-handed goal, his second goal of the game.

The Pats added to the scoring 30-seconds on, with a power play goal from Cole Dubinsky.

The middle period also saw 15 penalty minutes for the Hurricanes for hooking, boarding, slashing and unsportsmanlike conduct. The Canes’ Jett Jones and Regina’s Robbie Holmes were both assessed 5-minute majors for fighting.

With five seconds left in the period, Regina’s Ty Kolie added a power-play goal, cutting the Canes’ scoring lead to 5-4.

Scoring was non-existent during the final 20-minutes of the game but, both teams added to their penalty minutes. The Canes’ lead in penalty minutes, but also outshot the Pats 24-21 for a 5-4 win.

The Hurricanes have nine-points in nine games are sitting at 4-4-0-1. The team’s next game will be in Moose Jaw Tuesday evening.
