LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE: LPS Inspector Jason Walper the same person was likely involved in both incidents but is unknown to the child and her family.

Lethbridge Police were called to a home on Mt. Sunburst Way at 6:41 pm on Monday, October 14th on reports that a man tried to abduct a young girl.

The seven-year-old and two others, aged six and eight, were playing in the backyard when a man tried to grab her through a fence.

The three children started screaming and ran into the house. The other two girls say they did not see the man.

Police, including a K9 team, searched the area but were not able to find whoever was responsible.

According to the attending officers, this is the second incident in one week where something similar happened.

She had previously told her parents that, as she was walking home from school on October 9th, a man tried to grab her by the arm.

Inspector Jason Walper with Lethbridge Police Service has confirmed that it was likely the same man involved in both incidents, but add that the suspect is not known to the child or her family.

“The first incident, of course, was not reported to police on October 9th so we don’t have a lot of information in regards to that. The second occurrence, obviously, police were notified within an hour of the occurrence. The sooner we are notified, the sooner we can respond and certainly, we can flood the area and identify any suspicious people in the area at the time.”

He has been described as a Caucasian man with dark hair, a thin build, a tattoo on his right wrist, and a gold ring with a diamond on the right hand. He was wearing a black hoodie, dark pants, and black dress shoes.

“Any time your child approaches you and says something like this has happened, the first thing I would say is question your child, get as much detail as possible. If you deem this is something that needs reporting to police, certainly report it to police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call Lethbridge Police at 403-328-4444 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
