U of L and Lethbridge College Thanksgiving Weekend Sports Recap: Oct. 11-13, 2019

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Between delicious turkey dinners, athletes from Lethbridge College and the U of L made time to hit the fields and court. Here’s a recap of some of the Thanksgiving action.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The men’s basketball team was in Red Deer for the Thanksgiving Basketball Classic and results fared well for the Kodiaks. They beat Burman University last Thursday (Oct. 10) 110-77 and followed that with a Friday win over the University of Alberta-Augustana. Final score was 84-59.

On Saturday, they wrapped up the event with a 92-65 win over the Okanagan Coyotes. The Kodiaks face Briercrest College in league play this Saturday, Oct. 19.

The women’s team had the weekend off and face Briercrest as well this coming Saturday.

On the soccer pitch, the men’s team tied 1-1 with Medicine Hat College on Sunday (Oct. 13). The women’s team beat the Rattlers 5-1. Both the men’s and women’s teams face Ambrose University today (Tuesday, Oct. 15) in league play.

For cross-country, teams competed at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Grand Prix #5 in Camrose. Overall, it was Red Deer College that collected the team trophy.

However, the women’s Kodiaks crew took top honours, ahead of the Red Deer Queens.

Both volleyball teams had the weekend off.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The women’s basketball team had a tough go against Carleton University (Ottawa0 in Calgary on Saturday (Oct. 12). Final score was 71-59. The ‘Horns face the University of Victoria on Friday, Oct. 25.

The men’s side went 2-0 this weekend. They beat the Université du Québec à Montréal in a close contest. Final score was 84-82. Their next game (Saturday, Oct. 12) against Ontario Tech was a little less close, with the ‘Horns winning 97-81. The men’s team faces the University of Providence on Oct. 25.

On the ice, the men’s hockey team beat the University of Regina twice in a row. Friday’s final was 4-1, with Saturday being a 7-5 victory for the U of L. The women’s team beat the Cougars 5-2 on Friday and lost 2-1 on Saturday. Both teams face the University of Saskatchewan this Friday (Oct. 18), with the women on home ice in Lethbridge and the men on the road.

While the men’s soccer team rested this weekend, the women’s crew faced Mount Royal University Saturday in Calgary; losing 1-0. The ‘Horns bounced back Sunday on home field to claim the 2-1 win. It was the U of L’s first win of the season and final home game of the Canada West campaign.

The women’s team hits the road this coming weekend with the hopes of securing a playoff berth. They face the University of Winnipeg on Friday (Oct. 18) and the University of Manitoba on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Ahead of the Canada West Championships, the women’s rugby team fought hard, but lost 22-5 against the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday (Oct. 11). The Canada West semi-finals are in Lethbridge this Friday, Oct. 18 at the U of L Community Stadium.
