Opportunities and challenges in the 2020–2024 National Beef Strategy

CALGARY –– The release of the 2020-2024 National Beef Strategy outlines global opportunities and industry challenges.

Anne Wasko Chair of the Beef Advisors, says this is the next five year plan.

“Of course there’s been a plan for the previous five years, so it was time to sit down, re-evaluate the goals, the challenges for the industry, the opportunities for the industry and look forward five years and say – here’s what we need to tackle, moving the meat out, moving the industry forward, all of the groups working together, nationally and provincially again, to build a united industry and a stronger industry, as we go into the future.”

Globally, the demand for all types of protein grows, which Wasko says offers exciting times ahead.

“We can always talk about the challenges, and there are many still in our industry, that’s why we need a plan of attack. But, at the same time, wee need to be able to look beyond those and build on the opportunities – certainly one that continues to be a strong for our industry is in the whole area of trade and being able to access, and have meaningful access to key markets that want high quality Canadian beef.”

The National Beef Strategy promotes a united approach to position the Canadian beef industry for greater profitability, growth and continued production of a high-quality product. In their work, Wasko points to the program’s track record.

“It’s certainly a dynamic plan, where, as we go through a time frame, we’ve got metrics and barometers and goals to measure and look at as we’re going forward and check to see if we need to adjust them.”

“We’ve got the same strategy for 2020 to 2024, but from the previous strategy goals, you can basically see targets that were set out under trade that we met. In terms of beef demand, there was a target set for a triple-A cut-out and that was met as well, and now we certainly want to increase that target, because as wholesale beef prices, as the cut-out moves higher, so do live cattle prices.”
