Alberta students elect Conservatives in mock vote

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In what mirrors the adult vote in the 2019 federal election, students in southern Alberta would have also elected the Conservatives in all four local ridings. More election coverage here.

Country-wide, more than 1.1-million elementary and secondary students took part in Student Vote Canada 2019.

They first learned about the electoral process, researched the parties and platforms, and debated Canada’s future. The youths then took part in a mock vote to see where the Grade 1-12 students stood.

Nationally, the Liberals would have formed a minority government with 22.3% of the popular vote and 110 seats. The NDP would become the official opposition with 24.8% support and 99 seats. The Conservatives garnered the most votes at 25.1% but were only awarded 94 seats.

Provincially, the Conservatives won with 46%, the NDP were in second at 21%, and the Liberals finished third at 13%.

The winners in southern Alberta’s four ridings are the same as the actual vote with all of them going blue.

In Lethbridge, Rachael Harder secured 54.55% of the total vote.

For Bow River, 61.9% voted for Martin Shields.

John Barlow won in Foothills with 65% of the vote.

And Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner re-elected Glen Motz with 55.8%.
