FORT MACLEOD, AB – RCMP have laid charges against four protesters for “gaining unlawful access” to a local turkey farm.

At approximately 7:15 am on Monday, September 2nd, a group of activists gathered on the farm and the adjacent highway.

“On arrival, RCMP located several people who had entered the barn area unlawfully,” reads a media release from Fort MacLeod RCMP. “The situation was resolved peacefully with the landowner and protesters, all of whom departed by 12:15 pm.”

Trev Miller, one of the group’s organizers, previously emailed LNN with photos and details of the protest.

He said 90 people took part, including 35 who were wearing “biosecurity outfits” that included marks, gloves, coveralls, and boot covers “to ensure health considerations of all individual animals”.

Miller told us the protesters were from all over Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, and Ontario. They looked to “expose injustices facing those on factory farms.”

“Pictures showing the vermin-infested filth the animals were subjected to constantly emphasized personal protection, while employees working at the barn demonstrate the barest of concern for their own safety and none at all for individuals under their responsibility,” reads a statement from Miller.

Of the 90 protesters, four have been charged. They include 46-year-old Maxwell Ming Mah of Edmonton, 28-year-old Claire Buchanan of Calgary, 24-year-old Kennadi Rae Herbert of Pincher Creek, and a 16-year-old girl from Calgary.

They are each facing one count of break and enter to commit mischief.

The four have been released from custody. The adults are scheduled to appear in Fort MacLeod Provincial Court on November 27th, 2019, while the youth is set to appear November 15th.

Miller did not specify in his email which of the activists were shown in each photo, so we cannot say for sure if any of them are among the four who were charged.
