LETHBRIDGE, AB – Communities across Canada are celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Month.

Dyslexia Canada says the theme for this year is Mark It Read, which reflects “the markings of a teacher’s red pen – which serves as a constant reminder of the challenge for dyslexic students to keep up with their peers”.

23 notable buildings and monuments across the country will be lit up in red to reflect this. One of the communities taking part is Lethbridge.

NEW STUDY

A new study between Dyslexia Canada and IG Wealth Management took a look at Alberta’s views on the learning disability.

It found that 80 percent of Alberta residents believe more funding needs to be directed to allow the education system to support children with dyslexia.

Only 29 percent of residents in the province know how to recognize if someone has dyslexia and 84 percent believe it’s important for all teachers and educators who work with dyslexic students have some sort of specialized training.

72 percent of residents believe that more funding is needed to test children for the disability and 74 percent think legislation specifically designed to support Canadian children with dyslexia or signs of dyslexia would be important.

Additionally, it was found that 80 percent believe that there should be mandatory, in-school early screenings for signs of dyslexia in young learners.

Dyslexia Canada says that the disability directly impacts 15 to 20 percent of Canadians.
