LETHBRIDGE, AB – A strong first period and two last-second goals sealed the deal for the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the ENMAX Centre Friday night.

The ‘Canes extended their win streak to six games with a 5-2 win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.

FIRST PERIOD

The Hurricanes started early with a goal by Dino Kambeitz – his fifth of the season – at the 3:00 minute mark of the opening frame. Koletrane Wilson and goaltender Carl Tetachuk picked up the assists.

The goal was Dino’s fifth of the season. He started off the period with a goal and it was Jett Jones who scored to close out the first 20 minutes.

Jones scored his second of the season, assisted by Danila Palivko and Noah Boyko.

On the penalty side, the period was relatively quiet.

Only two penalties were called, both on Wheat Kings skaters. Jonny Hooker was called for tripping (minor) at 16:32 while Ridly Greig was given a minor for boarding at the 19:31 mark to close out the opening period.

Going into the intermission, Lethbridge held a strong 2-0 lead.

SECOND PERIOD

The scoring in the second didn’t come as quick as in the first, but Lethbridge fans were certainly on their feet as Dylan Cozens picked up his ninth goal of the campaign at the 12:41 mark.

Koletrane Wilson recorded his second assist of the game.

Before the buzzer sounded to mark the end of the frame, Brandon got on the board thanks to a goal from Nolan Ritchie, his first of the season – Chad Nychuk and Lynden McCallum with the assists.

In the second, it was Lethbridge who picked up the two called penalties. Logan Barlage received a minor for interference at 2:30 and Koletrane Wilson was dinged with a minor for interference at 17:19.

At the end of the second, Lethbridge continued to hold the lead at 3-1.

THIRD PERIOD

Things ramped up in the third, with the Wheat Kings bringing Lethbridge’s lead down to one.

At 7:41, Cole Reinhardt scored an unassisted short-handed goal to make it 3-2.

23 seconds in saw the first penalty called – a minor for roughing on Lethbridge’s Dino Kambeitz. At 5:55, it was Brandon’s Ridly Greig called for checking to the head (minor) and at 9:21, Dom Schmiemann was called for a cross checking minor.

At 15:41, Lethbridge’s Alex Thacker was called for a minor for goaltender interference. However, that didn’t deter the Hurricanes.

Oliver Okuliar scored an emoty-netter after the Wheat Kings pulled goalie Ethan Kruger. Okuliar’s seventh goal of the season came at 19:36.

Seconds later before the final buzzer sounded, it was Joe Arntsen scoring his first goal of the season, at 19:57.

That was all she wrote, and the Hurricanes came away with the 5-2 victory, much to the delight of the ENMAX Centre crowd.

The win extends the ‘Canes’ victory streak to six games. Up next for Lethbridge is another home game tomorrow, October 26 against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Wheat Kings face Swift Current in Saskatchewan tomorrow.
