LETHBRIDGE, AB – A 37-year-old man from Standoff charged in connection with possession of a machete and hunting knife at the Supervised Consumption site, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail. With time already served, the sentence amounts to 10 days.

Shane Garrett Williams appeared in Lethbridge Provincial Court via CCTV on Friday (Oct. 25), and pleaded guilty to one count of possession of weapon, possession of methamphetamine and breach of probation.

According to a Statement of Facts submitted by the Crown, on Sept. 1, 2019 around 6:30 a.m. Williams, along with several other males were in the parking lot of the Supervised Consumption Site on 1 Ave. S. when someone observed a machete being passed around. Police were called, found the machete, a hunting knife, and a small amount of methamphetamine on the suspect.

Crown Prosecutor Bruce Ainscough told Judge Derek Redman that Williams has a lengthy criminal record which includes property crimes.

A man with the same name was also facing charges relating to a stabbing in south Lethbridge in 2017, and charges in connection with a north Lethbridge liquor store robbery and aggravated assault, which left an employee with head injuries in March of this year.

When asked by Redman whether he had anything to say, Williams declined at first. The judge then told him what he had done at the Supervised Consumption Site was part of the reason why there were issues with public perception at the SCS.

“You’re an individual with a lengthy record. You’re on probation and you’re back at the site (SCS) to use drugs. But you have weapons on you. What do you have to say?” asked Redman.

“They were given to me,” said Williams. “I wasn’t in my right mind.”

“It’s one thing to go to the site,” said Redman. “It’s another to go with weapons.”

Redman did accept a joint submission from both the Crown and Defense for a 30-day global sentence. Williams will remain in custody by consent on numerous other charges.

He’ll be back in court Oct. 29.
