EDMONTON, AB – It was a night of celebration for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks soccer teams Thursday.

In Edmonton on October 24, the Kodiaks men and women’s teams earned ACAC player and coach of the year honours.

Ben Knight was named the league’s player of the year. The third-year mid-fielder led the team to a second-place finish in the ACAC south division. He also led the league in assists with 12 – five more than any other player in the conference. In addition, he scored three goals.

Knight is the third Kodiak to pick up the award, after Nico Pasquotti in 2015 and Kyle Yamada in 2008.

On the women’s side, Christine Moser earned the women’s south division player of the year award. Also in her third year, she earned a spot on the team as a walk-on three seasons ago. She helped lead the Kodiaks to their first division title in 24 years. She scored five goals and three assists this season.

Sean Carey was named the ACAC coach of the year for both the men and women’s squads. Carey’s in his third season as head coach of both teams and helped them post the second-most successful regular seasons in the club’s history.

Both teams are nationally ranked. Carey was the first person ever to win the division coach of the year on both the men and women’s side in one season last year. This season, he’s become the only coach to win the award at the ACAC level.

His wins at Thursday’s banquet mark his fourth and fifth ACAC coaching awards.

Knight will move forward as a contender for the CCAA player of the year award, and Carey advances as the ACAC’s nominee for CCAA coach of the year on both the men and women’s sides.

In addition, the Kodiaks had six players named to the south division all-conference teams. Moser and defender Jasmin Salmon received spots on the women’s team. Along with Knight, forward Jimmy Bukuru, defender Jaden Veluw and goalie Cody Ferguson were named to the men’s team.

Both teams are staying in Edmonton this weekend for the ACAC championships. The men’s team faces The King’s University Eagles at 4:00 p.m. today (Oct. 25), while the women received a first-round bye and will face either Olds College or Concordia University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals.
