Hurricanes’ streak snapped in shootout loss to Medicine Hat

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In front of a crowd of over 4,000 people, the Lethbridge Hurricanes were looking to extend their win streak to seven games, but the Medicine Hat Tigers brought the fight on route to a 3-2 shootout victory.

FIRST PERIOD

Medicine Hat got the scoring started early, via a goal from James Hamblin at the 36-second mark. His sixth of the season was assisted by Brett Kemp and Cole Sillinger.

Lethbridge wasn’t going down without a fight in the opening frame however, with a goal from Oliver Okuliar at 15:55 on the power-play. Dylan Cozens and Alex Cotton earned the assists on that one.

When the opening period’s buzzer sounded, the game was tied at 1-1.

Penalty-wise, D-Jay Jerome of the Hurricanes was called for tripping 8 seconds into the game. The minor led to Hamblin’s opening goal for Medicine Hat.

Hamblin was later called for delay of game 13 minutes in. The final penalty call of the period went against Tiger Parker Gavlas for boarding at 14:47, leading to Okuliar’s game-tying goal.

SECOND PERIOD

The third goal of the game came late in the second, with Dylan Cozens getting past Medicine Hat goaltender Garin Bjorklund at 14:20. D-Jay Jerome and Koletrane Wilson picked up the assists.

Three penalties were called throughout the period – Baxter Anderson (Medicine Hat) for hooking at 6:09, Logan Barlage (Lethbridge) for holding at 11:09 and Lethbridge’s Justin Hall for interference at 16:13.

THIRD PERIOD

The third period started with a penalty call on Parker Gavlas, a minor for charging at 8:31. However, the Hurricanes were unable to capitalize on the power-play.

Later at 12:58, Calen Addison was called for a cross-checking minor, putting the Tigers on the power-play. The visiting team took advantage, with Elijah Brown getting one past Carl Tetachuk to tie the game 2-2 at the 13:20 mark.

Ryan Chyzowski and Brett Kemp assisted Brown’s third goal of the year.

Parker Gavlas was called for his second penalty of the period – a minor for elbowing. Fortunately for Medicine Hat fans, the ‘Canes couldn’t take advantage and the game was sent to overtime.

OVERTIME

No goals were scored in the extra period, but Medicine Hat’s James Hamblin was called for hooking, receiving the minor penalty at the 2:50 mark.

Going into the shootout, the pressure was on for the Hurricanes – who were looking to keep up their recent winning streak. However, that wasn’t meant to be.

Hamblin scored the only goal in the shootout, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Tigers.

The Hurricanes travel to Winnipeg Wednesday, October 30 to face the ICE.

The Tigers travel to Vancouver Island to face the Victoria Royals on Saturday, November 2.
