EDMONTON, AB – History was made in Edmonton this weekend.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer team won its first ever ACAC championship, with a 2-0 victory over Red Deer College Sunday evening.

The tournament was hosted by NAIT and the Kodiaks won three straight games to bring home the gold. The win propels them into next month’s CCAA national championship.

In Sunday, final, Owen Beers scored the first goal for the team, assisted by Ben Knight. Going into half-time, Lethbridge College was up 1-0. In the second half, Jimmy Bukuru picked up a rebound off a shot by Knight to get past the Kings netminder, making it 2-0.

That lead was held by Lethbridge for the rest of the game’s play, with Cody Ferguson earning his second shutout of the tournament. When all was said and done, the final score stood at 2-0 for the Kodiaks.

During the regular season, the team finished second in the ACAC south division with a record of 8-1-3. They entered the ACAC championships ranked 15th in all of Canada.

The CCAA nationals are from Nov. 6 to 9 and will be hosted by Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario.

BRONZE FOR WOMEN’S TEAM

The Kodiaks women’s soccer team fared well this weekend, too. They won a second straight ACAC bronze medal, courtesy of a 1-0 victory over the SAIT Trojans.

The win is the third conference medal in program history. Dairy Holmes scored the Kodiaks only goal in the bronze medal game, with Micaela Stone recording the shut-out.
