LETHBRIDGE, AB – Telus is making significant investments into its PureFibre optic network, new cell towers, and enhanced wireless capabilities.

They will be spending $16-billion across Alberta between now and 2023 on new communications infrastructure and operations, which includes $40-million in Lethbridge.

“TELUS is proud to make this generational investment in Lethbridge, providing the technology to bridge geographic and socio-economic divides and connect citizens to the people, resources, and information that make their lives better,” said Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of TELUS.

“Alberta is home to more than 14,000 TELUS team members and retirees, making TELUS one of the largest private-sector employers in the province. The technology our team deploys enables entrepreneurs, start-ups and home-based businesses to benefit from lightning-fast Internet speeds that make the most efficient use of their time and resources and allows residents to live and work in nearly any corner across our province without compromising productivity or economic opportunity.”

The company will increase internet speeds for homes and businesses, expand the capacity and reach of their 4G LTE cellular network, and prepare for the future implementation of 5G service.

“We look forward to connecting more Albertans to TELUS PureFibre and our industry-leading wireless networks, attracting new industries and innovators to the province and Lethbridge, while supporting the jobs of today and those that have yet to be imagined,” adds Entwistle.

Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf says this significant investment is a sign of confidence in Alberta’s economy.

“Not only will this strengthen and enhance the technological capacity of one of Canada’s leading companies but it will also create nearly 5,000 jobs over the next five years. This kind of investment helps to stabilize and grow our economy in multiple areas from rural to urban and from healthcare to agriculture. Thank you TELUS for leading the way through innovation, technology and this significant investment.”

Since 2000, Telus has spent over $45-billion on technology and operations in Alberta.
