WINNIPEG — The Lethbridge Hurricanes began a three-game road trip with a loss in Manitoba in the first of two games the Winnipeg Ice.

The first period didn’t offer much in terms of action as the two teams were meeating for the first time this season. The players seemed to be spending their time sizing each other up as the period produced one minor penalty for slashing, against the Canes’ Calen Addison and no score as the buzzer finished off the first 20 minutes. The Ice did outshoot the Hurricanes 10-7.

The second frame opened on a positive note, as just 33-seconds after puck drop, the Canes’ Oliver Okuliar potted his 9th of the season, putting his team up 1-0.

The Ice worked hard on lobbing the shots at Carl Tetachuk. At the half-way mark of the period, the Ice’s Austin Schellenberg slipped a point shot between the pipes and the game was tied 1-1.

Forty minutes of play end with the Canes Logan Barlage and the Ice’s Jackson Leppard each earning themselves two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. The teams went to the dressing rooms with the game still tied 1-1 but, the Ice was ahead shots on goal 26-14.

The final 20-minutes opened similar the last 20. The Canes were first to get out in front at 2:34, as Calen Addison put his team ahead 2-1, off an assist from Alec Thacker. However, the lead was short lived, as four minutes later, Owen Peterson took advantage of a power play to the tied the game up.

Moving ahead two minutes more and Michael Milne squeaked the puck by Tetachuk to put the score at 3-2 for the Ice, with 10-minuts to go.

Shots on goal in the third were a lot fewer but, with 90 seconds to go, Tetachuck was pulled to the bench, leaving the numbers at 6 on 5 against the Canes. The plan did the trick, as Dino Kambeitz tied the game 3-3 off an assist from Dylan cozens and Calen Addison.

Regulation time ran out with the tie and the game headed to over-time. Tetachuck defended his territory and the game moved on to a shoot-out. Unfortunately, it the Ice took the win – 4-3, after out-shooting the Canes 42-34.

The shoot-out loss offered the Canes a single point, to put the team at 9-4-0-2 in the standings.

The two teams meet again Friday night and then the Canes move on to Brandon before heading home.
