Construction on University Drive twinning project to come to an end for 2019

Oct 31, 2019 | 3:49 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – City construction crews are hopeful that work on the University Drive Twinning project will wrap up for the year, by the end of next week. The area is being twinned from north of Stadium Drive W, to south of SunRidge Blvd W to increase the roadway’s capacity to handle more traffic.

According to the city, an early snowfall followed by a cold, wet fall have been challenging crews, however it’s expected that the Grand River Blvd intersection will soon re-open to traffic entering and exiting the Riverstone neighborhood.

Because there’s been so much construction traffic in the area, it was decided that it would be safer to keep the intersection closed for the next week to allow crews to get as much done as possible, before shutting down for the winter.

It’s not clear at this point whether the new lanes will be opened between Grand River Blvd and Riverstone Blvd before the shut down. The City says if that work can’t be completed, traffic accommodations will be put in place and the Grand River Blvd intersection will re-open for the remainder of the winter.

The pedestrian crossing will stay just south of Grand River Blvd W until permanent traffic lights are installed in the area.

The City thanks residents for their patience and understanding while construction is underway.
