Tips for how to stay safe on Halloween: RCMP

Oct 31, 2019 | 10:34 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Halloween may be the spookiest night of the year, but that does not mean it has to be the most dangerous.

Alberta RCMP have offered some safety tips for drivers, trick-or-treaters, and partiers to avoid the “ghosts, ghouls, and other creatures that go ‘bump’ in the night.”

For trick-or-treaters:

  • Encourage children to wear a light-coloured costume or attach adhesive reflective strips so they can be more visible to traffic
  • Face paint is a good alternative to masks and hoods, which can obstruct your vision
  • Only cross the street at marked crosswalks
  • Travel in groups and ensure children are accompanied by parents, guardians, or other trusted adults
  • Carry a flashlight if you are trick-or-treating at night
  • Only approach houses with their lights on – not everyone takes part in Halloween
  • Do not approach strangers or animals you don’t know

For drivers and partiers:

  • Be aware that trick-or-treaters may suddenly enter the roadway
  • If you are wearing a costume, ensure it does not obstruct your vision
  • Do not drive impaired under any conditions
    • Call a taxi or ride share service, or have a designated driver
  • Pull in and out of driveways slowly
