Okuliar does it again – another Hat Trick during a 5-2 win in Brandon

Nov 2, 2019 | 10:23 PM

BRANDON — After an 8-2 win in Winnipeg the night before the Hurricanes were riding a high on their way into Brandon Saturday (Nov 2).

The first power play of the game materialized at the eight-minute mark of the first period and the First Star player from the previous night’s game, Oliver Okuliar, grabbed the advantage to put the Canes on the board. Calen Addison and Dylan Cozens were credited with the assist.

The period was riddled with penalties – for the Wheat Kings. However, the Wheaties’ Neithan Salame tied the game 14:19. Brandon held the score to 1-1 as the period wound down.

The second frame began the same way the first did. Oliver Okuliar, again at the eight-minute mark, lobbed the puck through the pipes and the Canes were up 2-1. Alex Thacker added his first goal of the season at 12:14, lifting the Hurricanes to 3-1 and that’s where the score remained until the buzzer.

It turned out to be a penalty filled game and over half of them were handed out in the last 20-minutes and once again, the first goal didn’t come until a third of the way through the period. This time, it was Brandon’s Ridly Greig, who reduced the scoring gap to 3-2 for the Canes.

What followed was a stream of roughing and slashing penalties against both teams’ players. However, it was the Canes who added goals. At 11:20, D-Jay Jerome tucked in the insurance goal and two minutes later Oliver Okuliar added a short-handed goal, his 15th of the season and third of the game, for his second Hat Trick in as many games.

The Canes held the score to 5-2 as the minutes ticked away. The only other action in the game was the ten-minute misconduct for Hurricane Koletrane Wilson and Brandon’s Dom Schiemann.

The games three stars:

1) ‘Canes Oliver Okulia – 3-goals

2) ‘Canes Dylan Cozens – 3-assists

3) Neithan Salame – 1 goal

The Hurricanes’ are 11-4-0-3 on the season. Their next game is Wednesday night when they host Swift Current.
