U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Recap: Nov. 1-3, 2019

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a light weekend as far as sports played goes, but the teams that were in action were quite busy, including the U of L basketball teams, who started off their 2019/2020 regular seasons.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The men’s volleyball team went 2-0 against Olds College, winning Friday’s (Nov. 1) matchup 3 sets to 1 and Saturday’s afternoon game 3 sets to 0. The men face Medicine Hat College this Friday and Saturday.

The women’s team went 1-1 against Olds College. On Saturday, the Broncos got the better of the Kodiaks 3 sets to 1, but Lethbridge turned the tide on Saturday with a 3-0 victory. Like the men’s team, the women will face Medicine Hat College Friday (Nov. 8) and Saturday (Nov. 9).

The Kodiaks basketball teams had dominant victories over Ambrose University. The women beat the Lions 84-46 on Saturday, while the men claimed a 96-74 victory.

Both basketball teams play Medicine Hat College on Saturday (Nov. 9).

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The men and women’s basketball teams opened up their regular seasons against the University of Alberta. The women lost 66-54 on Friday (Nov. 1) before rebounding for a 74-66 victory on Saturday.

The men’s team lost both of their matchups; 91-86 on Friday and 105-83 on Saturday.

Both teams are in Manitoba against Brandon University Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9.

The swim team had some major success at the Colleges Cup in Vancouver. The event is a set-up for the Canada West Championship.

On the men’s side, the team had five podium finishes, including two from the relay teams.

Tom Utas, Adam Stromberg, Chris Alexander and Raine Arden helped bring the ‘Horns to a top spot in the 200-metre free relay. The same four earned a third place finish in the 400-metre free relay as well.

Utas earned a silver in the 50-metre free solo event. His time qualified him for the U SPORTS Championships in the New Year. He also placed fourth in the 100-metre free event.

Ryan Mah claimed silver in the 50-metre butterfly, with Adam Stromberg picking up a bronze in the 50-metre free swim.

Chris Alexander locked in two top 10 performances in the 50 and 100-metre backstroke events, with Aidan Goodwin placing ninth in the 50-metre backstroke.

On the women’s side, Tricia Fair and Emilia Hesterman each registered multiple top 10 results.

Fair finished eighth in the 50-metre freestyle and ninth in the 100-metre free, 50 and 100-metre butterfly events.

Hesterman placed seventh in the 50-metre breaststroke and 10th in the 100-metre individual medley.

The U of L’s swim program will host the Canada West Championships from November 22 to 24, 2019.
