Kodiaks soccer coach wins major award

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College’s head soccer coach continues to rack up the accolades.

Sean Carey was named the CCAA national men’s soccer coach of the year Tuesday (Nov. 5) evening in Oshawa, Ontario. The Kodiaks are in Ontario battling for the CCAA national title.

Last month, they claimed their first ACAC championship.

Carey is in his third season as dual coach of the men and women’s teams.

He led the men’s squad to a record of 9-1-3 this season and a second-place finish in the ACAC south division before they captured the ACAC championship in Edmonton.

Carey is the first Kodiaks coach to win a CCAA coach of the year award and last year, he was the first person ever to win both ACAC women’s and men’s south division coach of the year awards in the same season. Going when step further this season, he was the first person ever to be named ACAC coach of the year in both the men and women’s conferences in the same season.

Carey also has an ACAC south division coach of the year award from 2010, which he received during a two-year stint as head coach of the women’s team. This season, he earned a CCAA women’s coach of the year runner-up mention.

After coaching the women’s team in 2009 and 2010, he took a break from Lethbridge College before re-joining the ranks as coach of both teams in 2017.

PLAYERS AWARDED

In addition to the honour received by Carey, third-year Ben Knight was named a CCAA All-Canadian after having already been named ACAC player of the year, named to the ACAC all-conference team and an ACAC championship tournament all-star. The Kodiaks captain led the league with 12 assists.

At the CCAA women’s soccer awards banquet, third-year Christine Moser was named a CCAA All-Canadian. She was named the ACAC south division player of the year and helped lead the Kodiaks to their first division title in 24 years.

The Kodiaks men’s team fight for the CCAA national championship starts today (Wednesday, Nov. 6) with a quarterfinal matchup against the VIU Mariners. Semifinals take place Thursday with medal games set for Saturday. A full schedule and results can be found here.
