Unemployment rate down in Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The numbers are looking good for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region.

The unemployment rate was at 6.4 percent in October, down from 7.6 percent in September 2019.

Taking a look at October of last year, the rate was significantly lower, at 4.1 percent.

Across Alberta, the jobless rate was up slightly last month at 6.7 percent.

In September, it was 6.6 percent. The following is a breakdown per economic region in the province, with September’s jobless rate listed in brackets.

· Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 6.4 percent (7.6)

· Calgary: 7.4 percent (7.3)

· Red Deer: 7.3 percent (8.0)

· Edmonton: 6.9 percent (7.6)

· Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House & Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 5.8 percent (5.9)

· Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 5.1 percent (6.2)

· Camrose-Drumheller: 4.3 percent (5.1)

As far as age groups go, the unemployment rate for youth (15-24, male and female) was 13.2 percent. For adults (male and female) 25 and older, the rate was 5.7 percent in October.

For all ages (15 and up), October’s jobless rate was 6.7 percent.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE ACROSS CANDA REMAINS STEADY

Despite losing 1,800 jobs in October following two consecutive months of growth, Canada’s unemployment rate remained steady at 5.5 percent.

Statistics Canada says the number of full-time jobs fell by 16,100 offset in part by a gain of 14,300 part-time jobs. The manufacturing and construction sectors were the hardest hit, according to Stats Can.
