Rotary and IT for Dominica bring latest technology to island damaged by hurricane

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In 2017, tragedy struck the island of Dominica.

Hurricane Maria caused insurmountable damage and killed over 30 people. Now, the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East is offering some form of relief.

Rotarian Andrew Bronson and a team of IT gurus are in Dominica to help set up Chromebooks for students, through a partnership with the Lethbridge-based IT for Dominica Foundation.

Bronson said the IT for Dominica group has worked with the commonwealth for two decades, and the team will be working with the Ministry of Education on this project as well.

“The island of Dominica was hit by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and all the schools were destroyed; roofs came off, all the computers in the school system – I believe in every single one – were destroyed in all the schools,” Bronson said.

With the Chromebooks, Bronson said the goal is to train local technicians on how to work with the equipment as students will be able to use the Chromebooks for their studies in lieu of standard library and resource books.

“It’s a huge opportunity for this community [of] 60,000 people to have [the] latest in education.”

The seven-person team left for Dominica at the end of last week, arriving Sunday before beginning work yesterday, Nov. 11. The crew will be on the island for at least two weeks.
