LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has confirmed funding for a new pedestrian overpass in the city that will increase safety for those who walk or bike.

LNN reported Tuesday on several highway-related projects in southern Alberta that received approval from the province, and since then, Press Secretary with the Ministry of Transportation Brooklyn Elhard has provided more details to us for this project in Lethbridge.

She says the pedestrian bridge will be built over the intersection of Highway 3 and Scenic Drive South.

“The existing pedestrian crossing is 1.6 meters wide and is not adequate for use by pedestrians and cyclists,” reads a statement from Elhard. “The new structure will be 4.2 meters wide to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, and will include separation from vehicle traffic.”

The total costs, estimated at $2.6-million, will be shared equally between the provincial government and the City of Lethbridge.

It is currently in the preliminary engineering design phase and should begin construction in 2020.
