Castle Mountain Resort announces earliest opening in more than a decade

Nov 27, 2019 | 4:20 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Thanks to $2 million in upgrades and early snowfall this year, Castle Mountain will open earlier than it has in the last 10 years. A preview weekend will be held this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 30 & Dec. 1), with the official opening on Dec. 7. That’s about two weeks ahead of previous years.

According to Castle Mountain officials, top to bottom snowmaking infrastructure has been installed, along with state-of-the-art snowmaking machines. It will allow for 300 gallons of water per minute to be delivered to a new network of waterlines, allowing four to six snow machines to run simultaneously.

Marketing Manager Cole Fawcett says, “Our off-season investment in snow making infrastructure will result in noticeably better snow conditions, particularly early and late in the season.”

An ATCO natural gas line was also installed last summer, bringing natural gas to the resort for the first time. It’s expected to help lower operational costs and reduce 90 metric tonnes in greenhouse gases per year.
