Homicides fall by largest number in Alberta in 2018, zero homicides in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta had the largest decrease in homicides in the country last year compared to 2017.

That is according to a new report from Stats Canada.

Nationally, there was a 1.3% increase in homicides (13 more homicides) over this period, but the numbers in Alberta fell by 38 incidents.

By comparison, there were 30 fewer homicides in B.C. and 10 less in Quebec and Nova Scotia. Ontario saw these numbers rise by 69.

Calgary and Edmonton played a significant role in helping Alberta’s figures, with the numbers of homicides decreasing by 36.6% and 26% respectively.

Firearm-related homicides declined by 20 incidents in Alberta while there nine fewer that were gang-related.

The rate of Indigenous people being killed in homicides was five times higher than for those who are non-Indigenous across the country.

In Lethbridge, there were two homicides in 2017 and none in 2018.
