Hurricanes trounced by Medicine Hat 8-3

MEDICINE HAT –– The Hurricanes began a busy week of play Tuesday (Dec 3) night, as they travelled east to play the Medicine Hat Tigers. It was the fourth meeting of the season for the rival teams.

The game got underway with a string of five penalties within the first five minutes, including a penalty to the Canes for too many men on the ice. Then, just before the six-minute mark, Ryan Chyzowski scored on a powerplay, putting the Tigers on the scoreboard.

It didn’t take long for the Canes to respond. One minute later, Chase Wheatcroft took the pass from Dylan Cozens and slipped it past Tigers’ goalie Garin Bjorklund, to tie the score 1-1.

The next goal came at 15:15, as Dru Krebs added one for the Tigers, making the score 2-1, which is where it remained the clock ticked down on the first period.

Medicine Hat didn’t waste any time after the puck dropped for the second frame. Just 90-seconds in, Noah Danielson put the Tigers up 3-1, and by the half-way mark, the score was 4-1 for the Tigers.

However, the Canes fought back. With less than four minutes remaining in the period, Dylan Cozens found the back of thee Tigers’ net, assisted by Oliver Okuliar and Rylan Thiessen.

The period ended with Medicine Hat up 4-2 and leading the Canes in shots-on-goal 23-17.

The final 20-minutes began at a frantic pace. A mere 25-seconds in, Brett Kemp took advantage of a power play to put the Tigers up 5-2. One minute later, another power play opportunity presented itself, but this time it was Logan Barlage with goal – and the score was 5-3.

The scoring didn’t end there. Within another minute, Ryan Chyzowski potted his second goal of the game, putting the Tigers ahead 6-3.

Midway through the period, the Tigers were still energized and continued to hammer the Canes’ net. At 8:41, the Tabbies were up 7-3 – add another minute and the score was 8-3 for the Tigers, which is where the score remained until the buzzer.

It’ wasn’t a good night for the Canes, who were out-shot 34-23. All three Stars went to Tigers’ players, Ryan Chyzowski, Brett Kemp and Dru Krebs.

The Hurricanes are now 17-8-0-4 in the standings and have three more games this week. Wednesday night, the team hosts the Everett Silvertips.
