LETHBRIDGE, AB – About 100 people from several organizations – including the City of Lethbridge and YMCA, met at CASA in downtown Lethbridge Tuesday afternoon, to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

This year, the theme was “new decade, new directions.” Committee Chair Dylan Adkins said the aim was to make Lethbridge fully accessible to everyone who may have mobility issues.

“We’re looking at what the City of Lethbridge and some other organizations within the city are… planning on providing for citizens.”

He said great strides have been made with better curb designs and additional building entrances designed not just for people who can walk up and down stairs, but for those who may have mobility or visual issues as well.

“I think with how the City has managed making sure that the City is inclusive and as barrier free as possible. The City has done a great job of making those steps. We would like them to go further, but as of right now they have done an awesome job.”

Right now, the committee is working on the timeliness of snow removal and better access to and from bus stops.

Adkins says he’s most proud of how inclusive and welcoming his community can be.
