Lethbridge volunteer receives provincial award

EDMONTON, AB – Knud Petersen is one of six to receive a 2019 Stars of Alberta Volunteer award.

The Lethbridge resident was recognized in the senior category. Petersen has worked hard for many years in the community in different avenues covering sport, education and special events.

For over 25 years, he’s worked with the University of Lethbridge and its Pronghorn Booster Club, taking charge of fundraising events to support U of L athletes and coaches.

In addition to working with the local university, Petersen has also dedicated many years to the Lethbridge College Kodiak Athletic Association. He’s also a member of the Lethbridge Hall of Fame and the Chair of the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA).

Petersen received the award at a ceremony in Edmonton, to coincide with International Volunteer Day on December 5. The other winners include:

· Braydon Fix (youth), Sherwood Park

· Maryanne Leathwaite (youth), Okotoks

· Alicia Bjarnason (adult), Calgary

· Penny Steffen (adult), Grimshaw

· Madeleine (Maggie) Gervais (senior), McLennan

The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards program began in 2000. Since then, 127 Alberta volunteers have been recognized for their work. There are more than 26,000 non-profit organizations across the province with over 1.6 million volunteer positions.
