LETHBRIDGE, AB – Hockey Canada has announced its 24-man roster for the upcoming 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship and a couple of Lethbridge Hurricanes made the cut.

19-year-old Calen Addison is one of seven defenseman picked for the team. Addison was selected in the second round of the NHL draft in 2018 by the Pittsburgh Penguins and has represented Canada at both the under-17 and under-18 levels. He was a part of Canada’s gold medal winning crew at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. So far this WHL season, he’s scored seven goals and recorded 22 assists in 31 games.

Joining Addison is teammate Dylan Cozens, who was selected seventh overall by the Buffalo Sabres in this past summer’s NHL draft. Cozens is one of 14 forwards on the Canadian team. He competed with the national club at the Under-18 World Hockey Championship last spring. He’s also played for Canada at the under-17 level. Since being reassigned to the Hurricanes this season, he’s scored 20 goals and dished out 26 assists in 30 games.

The duo are the first Hurricanes players to skate for Canada at the World Junior Championship since Zach Boychuk was a part of the gold medal winning team in 2009. In years past, Canadians to represent the ‘Canes at that level have been Wes Walz (1990), Lee Sorochan (1995), Brent Seabrook (2004 and 2005). Boychuk also played for the club in 2008.

Six WHL players were named to the roster. They include Addison and Cozens, along with goalie Joel Hofer (Portland Winterhawks), defenseman Bowen Byram (Vancouver Giants), d-man Ty Smith (Spokane Chiefs) and forward Nolan Foote of the Kelowna Rockets.

The 2020 IIHF World Juniors start on Thursday, December 26 and run until Sunday, January 5 2020.
