LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge has announced a significant move with its oldest international partner.

The U of L and Japan’s Hokkai-Gakuen University (HGU) have signed a double-degree agreement. What this means is that students at HGU can complete their first two years at their home university followed by two years at the University of Lethbridge. This will help them earn degrees from both schools.

The agreement only applies to HGU students coming to Lethbridge.

Hokkai-Gakuen University is located in Sapporo, Japan. The two schools have worked together for 38 years on faculty and student exchange programs. Over 70 U of L faculty members have gone to HGU as visiting exchange professors. 60 HGU faculty members have visited Lethbridge.

Since 1986, around 300 HGU students have studied at the U of L and almost 220 University of Lethbridge students have attended HGU.

Summer programs are a part of the partnership between the schools. Every two years, a group of 15 to 20 Hokkai-Gakuen students come to the U of L to focus on learning English.

The U of L sends a group of students to HGU every two years as part of a summer cultural program.
