Hurricanes match up against Red Deer in Hockey Gives Blood challenge

Jan 3, 2020 | 11:28 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes are once again going toe-to-toe with the Red Deer Rebels in a blood drive.

As part of the Hockey Gives Blood challenge, the two teams will try to gather the most donations of blood for Canadian Blood Services (CBS) throughout the month of January. The goal for the Hurricanes this year is 150 appointments and 25 new blood donors this month.

The Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association will team up with the ‘Canes for the campaign.

Saturday, January 4 is set as the official kick-off day of the month-long initiative.

To mark the occasion, Coaldale resident Teresa Nihill and her family will drop the puck at the Hurricanes’ game against Calgary at the ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge.

Nihill was born with a congenital heart disease. Over the years, she’s gone through three open heart surgeries requiring over 40 transfusions of blood products, according to a release from CBS.

The CBS said she is now living an active life with her husband and two children.

Anyone looking to support this cause can attend the Lethbridge blood donor clinic and let staff and volunteers know they are donating on behalf of the Hurricanes to ensure the total is counted towards the team’s donations.

Lethbridge’s game against the Calgary Hitmen is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Blood donation appointments can be booked through https://www.blood.ca/en.
