CALGARY, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes went into Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome Friday night looking to pick up their first win of 2020.

They were also out for revenge, as they lost last Saturday (January 4) to the Hitmen in overtime. However, Calgary had the advantage as they were on home ice.

FIRST PERIOD

The game’s opening period was a fairly simple affair, with no penalties called but two goals were scored.

1:16 into the game, Lethbridge’s Noah Boyko scored his 10th goal of the season, thanks to an assist from Jett Jones.

Shortly after, at 3:34, Josh Prokop netted his ninth of the season, tying the game at one. Mark Kastelic and Riley Stotts earned the assists.

SECOND PERIOD

Shots were fired but no goals scored in the second. However, the period saw a number of penalties.

Hurricane Trevor Thurston was given a minor for roughing at 7:46, as was Calgary’s Riley Fiddler-Schultz.

At the 13:14 mark, Luke Prokop of the Hitmen was called for interference. Unfortunately for ‘Canes fans, Lethbridge could not capitalize on the power play.

Going into the third and final frame, the game was all tied up at one goal apiece.

THIRD PERIOD

1:04 into the third, Calgary’s Kastelic was issued a minor penalty (holding an opponent’s stick), putting Lethbridge on the PP.

Dino Kambeitz capitalized, scoring his 13th of the season, assisted by Koletrane Wilson and Noah Boyko at 1:52.

6:23 into the third, Danila Palivko (Lethbridge) was called for holding. Calgary, much like Lethbridge earlier in the period, took advantage of the power play.

Riley Stotts scored, assisted by Jett Woo and Mark Kastelic. Stotts’ 17th of the season tied the game 2-2.

At 7:05, Calgary’s Devan Klassen was issued a minor for kneeing. Lethbridge was unable to score on the power play.

However, minutes later at 12:11, Alex Cotton scored to give Lethbridge the 3-2 lead.

Brett Davis earned the assist, along with Oliver Okuliar, who was back with the team fresh off his time representing Slovakia at the IIHF World Juniors.

Unfortunately, late in the game, Dino Kambeitz was hit awkwardly into the boards and was helped off the ice.

This led to a slew of penalties issued at the 13:57 mark.

Minor penalties were given to Lethbridge’s Justin Hall and Koletrane Wilson (roughing) as well as Calgary’s Jackson van de Leest – who also received a 10-minute misconduct, and Jett Woo for roughing.

In the final moments of the game, Calgary pulled their goalie and Lethbridge capitalized. Fittingly enough, it was the returning Okuliar who scored the insurance goal to secure the 4-2 victory for the Hurricanes!

The ‘Canes will look to keep their momentum going as they return home to the ENMAX Centre Saturday night (7 p.m., Jan. 11) to host the Swift Current Broncos.

Meanwhile, the Calgary Hitmen host Swift Current in a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.
