East Kootenays – First it was Fairmont Hot Springs – now, it appears Radium Hot Springs also has issues and has been forced to close.

On Thursday (Jan 9), visitors to the East Kootenays became concerned about the fact that the Fairmont Hot Springs public pools had been closed. The visitors had been to the pools several times in the preceding week and became concerned when their questions about the closure were not being answered.

LethbridgeNewsNOW (LNN) looked into the issue and discovered that Interior Health had issued a closure order for Fairmont pools on January 6, after inspections noted seven infractions – two of which were deemed ‘Critical’.

While Radium Hot Springs was the option of choice for those looking to relax in the mineral waters, LNN was notified by the same East Kootenay visitors on Saturday, that Radium pools now have issues as well.

The change rooms at the Radium pool facility were in the process of being renovated, but the pool was allowed to remain open under specific conditions.

However, an Interior Health inspection report was issued on December 19, 2019, which also mentioned “suction and entrapment hazards”. Then, on Saturday (Jan 11) Kootenay National Park posted the following on its Facebook page:

While closure of both pools has been undertaken in relation to health and safety concerns, the logistics relating to planning of maintenance and renovations at both resorts has left more questions than answers. LNN’s news team will continue to seek answers to those questions.
