Alberta broke its all-time energy consumption record Tuesday night

EDMONTON, AB – More energy was used in Alberta on the night of Tuesday, January 14th than at any other time in history.

According to Energy Rates, 11,698 MWH were consumed, surpassing the 2018 record by a single megawatt-hour.

The Alberta Electric System Operator said the “electricity supply in Alberta was tighter than usual during the cold snap, as families and businesses cranked the heat to face the temperature drop.”

ENMAX claims that, for every 10-degree drop in temperature below zero, the average home uses 40% more natural gas and eight percent electricity.

In order to keep your heating and electricity bills lower, Energy Rates suggests lowering the temperature in your home when everyone is sleeping or at work or school.

During the day, keeping your curtains open will allow you to use less lighting.

For a more long-term solution, ensure your home is insulated properly.
