LETHBRIDGE, AB – The hype was real as Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison returned to the Hurricanes lineup Friday night, following their gold medal success at the IIHF World Juniors.

Before the game, the duo was recognized with a special ceremony and video package honoring their time with Team Canada over the holidays.

FIRST PERIOD

Ahead of the game’s opening goal, Ethan Rowland was given a minor penalty for holding. The ‘Canes couldn’t deliver on their first power play of the game. However, minutes later at 12:22, Red Deer’s Cameron Hausinger scored to give the visiting team the early lead.

Fortunately for Hurricanes fans, Brett Davis – who was playing against his former Red Deer crew since being dealt to Lethbridge earlier this month – scored at 16:43 to tie the game. Danila Palivko and Cozens recorded the assists.

The opening frame went scoreless after that, but a tussle ensued between Lethbridge’s Noah Boyko and Chris Douglas at 18:33. Mason Ward (Red Deer) was also given a minor for high sticking.

At the end of one, the score was tied at one goal a piece.

SECOND PERIOD

4:27 into the period, Calen Addison was called for roughing. This was followed by a tripping call on Cozens, putting Lethbridge in a truly precarious position. Red Deer capitalized, with a goal from Jayden Grubbe at 6:44 that gave the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Tensions between the two teams remained high, and a fight broke out later in the frame which lead to penalties for Lethbridge’s Joe Arntsen and Red Deer’s Dallon Melin at 8:14.

At the 9:13 mark, Addison ripped one in to tie the game at 2-2, off assists from Palivko and Davis.

A fight would then break out between Red Deer’s Hausinger and Lethbridge’s Trevor Thurston at the 12:15 mark. That in turn lit a fire for the Hurricanes, and Ty Prefontaine scored a huge goal at 15:46 to put Lethbridge up 3-2. His second goal of the season was assisted by Oliver Okuliar and Cozens.

When the second period buzzer sounded, Lethbridge held a small cushion going into the final frame.

THIRD PERIOD & OVERTIME

The final period went back and forth in possessions for both teams, but it was Red Deer’s Josh Tarzwell who scored at 6:23 to tie the game at 3-3.

Minutes later, Hausinger, Cozens and Addison went at it – which resulted in a minor penalty called on Cozens for checking from behind.

The final buzzer in regulation sounded…and the game was headed to overtime!

The extra period didn’t take too long, and barely two minutes in, Okuliar dished off a pass to Alex Cotton, who ripped one past Rebels net-minder Byron Fancy at 1:52 for the win!

It was an evening of tension between two rival clubs and a night to celebrate two returning heroes in Calen Addison and Dylan Cozens. It was also a night that saw the ‘Canes extend their win streak to three.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes now embark on a seven-game road trip, starting tomorrow (Jan. 18) night against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Red Deer Rebels are in action tomorrow night as well. They’ll be back on home ice hosting the Prince Albert Raiders.
