BRANDON — After posting successive wins in the past week, a 7-1 win against Moose Jaw on Wednesday and a 7-2 win over Regina on Friday, the Hurricanes fought hard for their 6-5 O-T win in Brandon Saturday (Jan 25) night.

The host team owned the first period of play.

Cole Reinhardt charted his 24th goal of the season and his team’s first goal of the night at 4:35. From there, the Wheat Kings added a second goal at 9:11 and then a third at 13:38.

The buzzer ended he period with Brandon up 3-0 and out-shooting the Canes 11-7.

A courtesy from the Brandon team and fans during the break, as they offered an ovation in recognition of National Junior Team gold medal winners and Canes’ players Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison.

It didn’t take long for player angst to set in. Ninety seconds into the second frame, the Canes’ Noah Boyko and Brandon’s Ridley Greig were both cited five minutes for a Fighting Major. Boyko also got two minutes for Holding, which was served by Ty Nash.

At 3:41, Logan Barlage cut Brandon’s lead by notching a goal for his team, off an assist from Alex Thacker and Ty Nash. Unfortunately, the Wheaties added a goal at 6:55, putting their team ahead 4-1.

Less than a minute later, Dylan Cozens planted his 27th goal of the season and at 15:49, Danila Palivko charted his first of the season, cutting Brandon’s lead to 4-3.

By the beginning of the last 20-minutes, it was clear the Canes were fighting back. At 2:42, Chase Wheatcroft tied the game 4-4, assisted by Dylan Cozens and Trevor Thurston. Then, at 7:47, Logan Barlage was on Brandon’s net and single-handedly put the Canes ahead 5-4.

However, the lead was short-lived. Just 90-seconds later, the puck was at the other end of the ice and Brandon’s Marcus Sekundiak tied the game 5-5. Another 60-seconds of play, and the Wheaties’ Ben McCartney was penalized for Cross-checking and a 10-minute game Misconduct,

Regulation time ticked down on the 5-5 tie, sending the game into over-time. Three minutes in, Dylan Cozens landed the game winner, off the assist from Logan Barlage and Calen Addison. The 6-5 O-T win makes it three wins in a three-game eastern road trip.

The Hurricanes are now 29-11-2-5 in the standings and return home for a break, before heading out to Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Reed Deer next week.
