Public feedback wanted on rules for municipal and school board elections

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta is launching public consultations on the Local Authorities Election Act.

The Act governs elections for cities, towns, villages, summer villages, municipal districts, counties, specialized municipalities, and school boards.

While it was already reviewed following the 2017 local elections, the province says it continues to receive feedback on gaps existing in the legislation.

They are now looking for Albertans to give their thoughts on how the rules can be improved to enhance transparency and participation.

“Albertans expect local elections to be fair, transparent and inclusive. This consultation will determine if and how we, as a government, can better meet these goals,” says Minister of Municipal Affairs Kaycee Madu.

“While this will not be a wholesale review like the one in 2018, we are looking to Albertans for feedback on areas that can be improved before the next round of municipal and school board elections.”

Specifically, input is needed on the length of campaign periods, the nomination process, campaign finances, third-party advertising, and recalling municipally-elected officials.

An online survey has been launched which should take 15-20 minutes to complete. It is open until March 4.

The province says they are planning to host focused discussions with representatives from municipalities and community advocacy groups, but the details of those have not been announced.
