Simon Griffiths appointed chair of Lethbridge Police Commission

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The new year has seen a few new appointments to the police service’s governing body.

Simon Griffiths is now the chair of the Lethbridge Police Commission. He has been on the commission for the last four years, most recently as the Vice-Chair.

Griffiths is replacing Peter Deys, who just retired from the Police Commission at the end of 2019.

“I’m excited about it,” says Griffiths. “I think there’s been some really good work done by my predecessors and I am pleased to be able to continue that.”

Although he is still brand new to this position, he has four ideas for what he would like to do.

One is to get the other new members of the Police Commission up to speed.

Robert Van Spronsen, who was already a member of the Police Commission, has taken Griffith’s seat as the Vice-Chair. Diane Conley and Bruce Thurber are joining the board for the first time.

“We want to make sure that, as a police service, especially in light of the [Operational and Fiscal Review] of the city that our police service is running in a financially-expedient way.”

Griffiths wants to continue to develop programs and strategies that will keep the people of Lethbridge safe.

The final point in his early-on plan it to carry on the search for a new police chief.

After the now-former chief Rob Davis announced in September 2019 that he would be moving to Ontario, Scott Woods was appointed as the Acting Chief.

He could not comment on how the search for the permanent chief has been going up to this point nor when he expects the position to be filled.
