U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Recap: Jan. 31- Feb. 2, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A lighter weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, but it was a busy three-day stretch for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns athletics program.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The men’s volleyball team extended its win streak to five games after a Friday night victory against Ambrose University in Calgary. Final score was 3-0 for the Kodiaks (25-23, 25-22, 25-22). The Kodiaks currently sit in second place in the ACAC south division standings with a record of 15-3.

The women’s team didn’t fare as well against Ambrose Friday evening, losing their second straight to the Lions. It was a close game with the Kodiaks falling 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 25-13, 26-24, 15-5). The Lethbridge College women’s team is in sixth place in the ACAC south division, with a record of 4-14.

Both volleyball teams are on home court this Friday (Feb. 7) to host Medicine Hat College.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The men’s basketball team continues to ride a winning streak – they’ve won their last four games. On Friday evening, they defeated MacEwan University 82-76 in Edmonton. Saturday night was another W, and a big one at that with the ‘Horns earning the 87-56 victory.

The team sits in 11th place (8-10) in the Canada West standings and have clinched a playoff spot, with two games left on the regular season schedule.

Kyle Peterson celebrated a special milestone. Peterson now sits in fifth place for Canada West career conference assists, splitting years with the Victoria Vikes and U of L Pronghorns. Peterson has recorded 462 career assists.

The women’s basketball team has won its last three games. On Friday, they defeated MacEwan 82-53 and Saturday saw a 69-54 victory. Their 9-9 record has them in ninth place and the team has clinched a playoff spot with two games left in the regular season.

The men’s hockey team continued to struggle over the weekend, losing 6-1 to the University of British Columbia Friday night, and 5-4 on Saturday. The team sits in eighth and last place in the standings.

The women’s team went .500 this weekend, picking up a 3-2 victory over UBC Friday and losing 2-1 on Saturday. The women’s team is in seventh place in the Canada West standings.

A bright note from the weekend was goaltender Alicia Anderson setting her place in the history books. Anderson is now in first place for Canada West career conference games played by a goalie with 119 games played, surpassing former ‘Horns netminder Crystal Patterson.

The curling teams took part in the Canada West Championships, hosted by Edmonton.

The men’s team went 1-3 over the tournament. They lost 8-6 to the University of Alberta Friday, 5-3 to Brandon University Friday evening, 9-5 against the University of Regina before a 10-7 win against the University of Victoria Saturday afternoon.

The women’s team went 0-4 over the two-day period.

They lost 10-1 to the University of Alberta Pandas, 10-5 against Brandon U on Friday night, 5-3 versus the University of Regina Saturday morning and 6-5 against the Victoria Vikes Saturday afternoon.

The University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas (men and women’s teams) won their respective divisions, taking away gold from the tournament.

The women’s rugby team competed in a 7’s series tournament in Vancouver Saturday (Feb. 1) and Sunday, which was won by the University of Victoria Vikes.

The Pronghorns started off strong, winning their first three games. They beat Trinity Western University 2-0 Friday, followed by a 36-0 win against the University of the Fraser Valley and a 15-14 win against the University of Alberta Pandas. Sunday was a different story, with losses to the UBC Thunderbirds (24-0) and the University of Alberta Pandas in the tournament’s third place game (21-17).

The Pronghorns finished the tournament in fourth place.

The track and field team was at the University of Manitoba for the 11th annual Jim Daly Bison Classic. The host men and women’s teams earned 284 points to win the weekend.

However, the U of L fared well. For the men’s side, Pronghorns throwers took five of six podium positions and took home the top six placings in the weight throw.

The women’s throwers swept the podium in the weight throw, with Madeline Szabo taking the top spot with a throw of 15.02 metres.

Full results for each individual event can be found at athleticsmanitoba.com. The Pronghorns track and field team will take part in their last tune up before the big Canada West Championships this coming weekend. They’ll be in Edmonton for the Panda Open.

The Canada West Championships are in Saskatoon February 21 and 22, 2020.

The Pronghorns swim team was in Regina for the Colleges Cup, a final tune-up before the U SPORTS Championships.

Aiden Godwin led the men’s side with 24 points and a second-place finish in the 100-metre breaststroke. Tom Utas was third in the 50-metre freestyle and Raine Arden barely missed a top three finish in the 400-metre freestyle.

Samuel Pauch-Nolan, a freshman, set personal best times as a Pronghorn in the 100 and 200-metre butterfly events. The men’s relay team finished second in the 400 freestyle relay.

On the women’s side, Ali Beck led the way with 12 points and a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle in light of the absence of the injured Tricia Flair.

The Pronghorns finished fifth in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. Emilia Hesterman was sixth in the 50-metre butterfly, and Adrienne Foscolos was eighth in the 100-metre breaststroke.

The U SPORTS Championships take place February 21 to 23, hosted by the University of Victoria.
