BROCKET, AB – The Peigan Board of Education has launched its first-ever Poster Campaign.

The initiative aims to recognize and honour people from the Piikani Nation who have served the community with distinction. Another goal is to inspire students.

“It’s to encourage our students here on the [Piikani Nation] to strive for excellence and to encourage good daily educational habits; going to school on a daily basis, looking at student retention, you know, staying in school, graduating, acquiring a diploma and just seeking out how to utilize those skills and move on to whatever aspirations that they may have, just like the people that [are] featured in the posters,” said Leroy Crazy Boy, Structural Readiness Coordinator with the Peigan Board of Education.

Crazy Boy said the initiative has been in discussion for “quite some time” and many names were brought forward for consideration, before the final 10 were selected.

“Seeing community members, especially in significant roles allows for students to really see what can be accomplished and because some of the honourees that are presented on these posters, like some of them don’t live on the reserve, some of them are still pursuing their academics or careers…[and] they’re away from the Nation…showing that these people are out there and are having an impact in our community and maybe other communities, just allows them [students] to see that these are people from our Nation that are having an impact,” he told Lethbridge News Now.

He added that although only 10 people are featured on the posters, there are countless others on the Piikani Nation who are making a difference in and around their community.

The Poster Campaign launch occurred at the traditional Pow Wow Celebration on January 30 at the Piikani Nation Secondary School gym.

Each honouree received a framed poster during the Pow Wow and each person was acknowledged with an honour dance.

Posters illustrating the individuals will be distributed in the Peigan Board of Education schools and classrooms for all students and staff to view.
