LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police have charged a 25-year-old Lethbridge man in connection with a Tuesday evening collision.

On February 11 at around 6:21 p.m., LPS received a complaint of a two-vehicle collision on University Drive between Bridge Drive and Highway 3.

Before officers could arrive on scene, the LPS says they were notified that the male driver of one of the vehicles was running away from the scene.

LPS members and a K-9 unit arrived on-site and spoke with witnesses who had followed the fleeing driver. Police say the male suspect was found laying down in a field just east of Burnco.

He had not suffered any injuries. The driver of the second vehicle involved was trapped inside, extracted and taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police say the 2017 grey Dodge truck involved in the collision was confirmed to have been stolen earlier in the day in Lethbridge. Various documents found inside, which did not belong to the registered owner of the vehicle, were later determined to have been stolen, according to the LPS.

Investigators found that the grey Dodge had been travelling north on University Drive, lost control and started to enter the east ditch.

According to officials, the driver attempted to correct the truck’s positioning to get back onto the road, crossed the center line and hit a vehicle moving southbound, pushing it into the ditch.

25-year-old Joshua Ryan MCarthur is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of stolen identity documents as well as multiple offences under the Traffic Safety Act.

He was released on an undertaking with numerous conditions and is set to appear in court on March 26, 2020.
