LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Hurricanes and the Winnipeg Ice both headed into this weekend hungry to hold a playoff spot and the back-to-back games could be pivotal for the playoff seeding for each team’s division.

The opening of the frame was played at a pretty slow pace with a couple of penalties. But, 12 minutes into the game, Ice defenseman Michael Teply lined up a slap shot from the hashmarks and sniped it past Canes’ Goalie Carl Tetachuk for the powerplay goal.

Just 10 seconds after that, the Canes fire back with two quick goals about a minute apart, both were scored by Hurricanes phenom Dylan Cozens for goals 30 and 31 of the season.

After some dangerous looks by a number of Ice players, the score sat at 2-1 for the Hurricanes to end the period.

Things got off to a chippy start when Hurricanes’ D-man Calen Addison fought Michael Milne and both received double majors.

Not long after that, the Canes go up 3-1 when Ty Dino Kambeitz banged in the rebound to give his team the two-goal lead with only 44 seconds into the frame.

After a couple of close shots from the point by the Canes and some great scoring chances, the second period closed out with a 3-1 lead for the Hurricanes, who were also leading with 23 shots on net to the Ice’s 17.

The final 20-minutes began with both teams picking up penalties, but not long after, the Hurricanes killed their penalty, Dylan Cozens passed the puck to Alex Cotton for the one timer to beat Ice goalie Liam Hughes, taking the Canes up 4-1.

Nine minutes into the period the Ice respond with somewhat of a comeback when Michael Teply scored again for the Ice for his second of the game.

After what Hurricanes fans thought was a response by Alex Thacker, it turned out to be goaltender interference and the game remained at 4-2.

Just moments later the Ice added another goal by Cole Muir, to cut the lead to just one goal – 4-3 for the Canes.

With the period winding down, the Hurricanes put pressure on the Ice for the last couple minutes before, who else but Dylan Cozens, scored his third goal of the game to give him the “Hat trick” and a 5-3 lead with just over four minutes to go in the final frame.

With under a minute to go, the Ice answered back with a wrist shot from Owen Pederson, to make it 5-4 for the Canes.

After some tough pressure by the Ice, the horn sounded with the Hurricanes picking up the win on a crazy finish.

Dylan Cozens was the star of the night and the Hurricanes get the two points.

The Canes’ and the Ice return to the Enmax tomorrow, Saturday the 15th, at 7pm.
