U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Preview: Feb. 14-16, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A lighter(ish) weekend for Kodiaks and Pronghorns teams.

However, there is a lot at stake for some of the teams in action this Valentine’s and Family Day weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks basketball teams are on their home courts for the final time this regular season. Both clubs host Olds College tonight (Feb. 14) with the women at 6:00 p.m. and the men’s team at 8:00 p.m.

Tomorrow, it’s a rematch against the Broncos, with the women playing at 1:00 p.m. and the men at 3.

The men’s basketball club sits in first place in the ACAC standings, with an impressive record of 16-1. The women’s team is in fourth place, holding a record of 9-8. The men’s team has already clinched a spot in the ACAC championships, while the women continue to fight for a spot in the post-season.

The women’s volleyball squad is in Calgary against SAIT at 6:00 p.m. tonight, with the men playing at 8. Tomorrow, the Kodiaks are back at home with the women playing at 6 and the men on the court at 8.

The women’s team (6-14) has been eliminated from playoff contention.

The men’s team (17-3) on the other hand, is getting set to host the Murray Chevrolet Cadillac 2020 ACAC championships from February 27 to 29.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

Both basketball teams will battle for a spot in the Canada West quarterfinals tonight (Feb. 14). The women’s team hosts the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at 6:00 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre. All-time, the Pronghorns are 5-1 against the T-Wolves.

The men’s club is also at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, with their game set for 8:00 p.m. The Horns face the University of Regina Cougars. There is history between the two teams. During the 2017-2018 Canada West playoffs, the Horns swept the Cougars two games straight in a best-of-three quarterfinal.

NEW SIGNINGS

In other U of L Pronghorns news, the women’s rugby team has announced the signing of Chinook High School product Teagan Viney for the 2020-2021 season.

The 5-foot-9 prop will team up with her sister Payton on the squad following her senior season with the Chinook Coyotes. In grade 11, she led the team in tries and served as the Coyotes’ captain.

She’s also a three-year provincial team member and has played with the both the U16 and U18 Wolfpack. In 2017, she won a national bronze medal and a Western Canadian Championship gold medal in 2019.

Viney is a member of the new Jr. Horns Academy that has run throughout the fall and winter and is coached by former U of L player Shannon Court.

On the ice, fourth-year Pronghorns defenceman Evan Wardley is joining the pro ranks. He’s signed a Standard Player Contract (SPC) with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL.

In his four seasons with the U of L, Wardley skated in 91 career games, including in 24 of 28 this season. The Vulcan native scored six goals and recorded 13 assists over the course of his career.

Before joining the Pronghorns, Wardley played nine games with the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL. He scored a goal and recorded three assists in those games. He also played four years in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds, lacing up his skates for 208 WHL games.
