LETHBRIDGE — One night after a 5-4 win for the Hurricanes, Winnipeg was back on the ice at the Enmax looking to revenge their loss against the hometown team.

Just three minutes into the opening round, Michael Milne planted an unassisted goal, to put the Ice on the scoreboard.

Winnipeg didn’t have the lead for long though. As the clock ticked off 6:36, Ty Nash took the puck on the assist from Jett Jones and Ty Prefotaine to help his team tie the game 1-1.

Winnipeg broke the tie on a powerplay at 14:52. However, with 20 seconds left on the clock, Dylan Cozens and Ty Prefontaine passed the puck to Alex Thacker, who was waiting and in front of the Ice net added a second goal for the Canes. The first period ended with the game tied 2-2.

The second frame got under way with a string of penalties. Just one minute in, Oliver Okuliar was nabbed for high sticking.

Shortly after, Logan Barlage was benched for two minutes after running into the Ice goalie behind the net. Winnipeg’s goalie, Liam Hughes, was tagged for ‘embellishment’, which was served by Jakin Smallwood.

As the teams worked out the five-on-five action, Owen Peterson got to the Canes’ net and stick-handled another goal to give the Ice a 3-2 Lead.

A succession of penalties followed. At 5:34, the Ice’s Dawson Barteaux was sent to the box for cross checking, while the Canes’ Zack Stringer went to the opposite box for slashing. In a flurry of action, Dylan Cozens appeared to snag a goal, but it was discounted. Just 90 seconds later, there was another set of double penalties, as Isaac Johnson and Calen Addison were each hit with 10-minute misconducts, resulting in four-on-four play.

The next goal didn’t come until 10:37, for Jakin Smallwood, giving the Ice a 4-2 lead. At this point, the Canes switched goalies, sending in Bryan Thomson to relieve Carl Tetachuk.

The frantic second period ended with the Ice continuing to lead 4-2.

The final 20 minutes produced a flurry of minor penalties and a single goal – for Winnipeg – putting the score at 5-2, as the Ice and the Canes split back-to-back game over the two nights.

The Hurricanes remain in second place in the Central division, with 75-points and are 34-13-2-5 in the standings. Their next game is Monday afternoon in Edmonton, when they take on the Central leading Oil Kings.
